Control4 is a professionally installed home-control system. It gives you one place to control things like your TVs, music, lighting, shades, thermostats, locks and other technology around the house. You can use the Control4 app, handheld remotes, touchscreens and keypads.

The idea is to give you one app that can control many different devices from different brands, while also making those different systems in the house work together and giving you a consistent way to control them.

Control4 has an annual subscription called Control4 Connect. The system can still control things locally in your home without it, but Connect is needed for some features, especially when you want to access or control the system while you are away from home.

We go through the current subscription options with you before the system is installed so you know what is required and what is optional.

You can make some everyday changes yourself, but Control4 is still a professionally programmed system. If you replace a TV, add equipment, change how devices are connected or want bigger programming changes, you will normally need a Control4 dealer.

If you enjoy tinkering with your system, trying new devices or doing a lot of the setup and changes yourself, Control4 may feel restrictive. It is designed to be professionally programmed and maintained, so some changes that would be DIY on other platforms will require a Control4 dealer.

As of August 2026, Control4 still has some advantages over Josh.ai, especially when a home has a lot of different systems or something unusual that needs to be integrated.

Control4 has been around much longer and has a much larger driver ecosystem. That gives us more options when we need to control something outside of the more common TVs, audio systems, lighting, shades and thermostats. Control4 also gives us more freedom to create custom programming when a client wants something very specific to happen.

It is also stronger today in some of the deeper integrations around security, cameras, doorbells and other less common systems. That does not mean Josh cannot control those things, but there are still situations where Control4 gives us more ways to make something work.

Both Control4 and Josh.ai continue to evolve, so the differences between them can change over time.

Control4 is a good fit if you want a professionally designed system that can bring a lot of different technology together and you are comfortable having a professional maintain the deeper parts of it.

It also makes sense when the house has complicated systems, unusual equipment or integrations that may require more custom programming.

We sell both Control4 and Josh.ai, so we are not trying to force every project into the same control system. The right answer depends on what is in the house, what you want it to do and how involved you want to be with the system after it is installed.
