We start with the floor plan, what you use, and what keeps dropping. Then we build around it, usually Ubiquiti UniFi with wired access points.
- Do I need wired access points, or will mesh work in a 6,000 square foot house?
For a home that size, we'd almost always recommend wired wireless access points. Mesh systems can work well in smaller homes and apartments, but they have limits across larger spaces. With mesh, the access points talk to each other over Wi-Fi, using some of the same wireless capacity your devices need. Wired access points connect directly back to the network, which gives each one a more reliable connection and more consistent performance throughout the house.
- Why is my Wi-Fi unreliable in a large home?
A common cause in larger homes is relying on wireless mesh equipment to carry the connection through the house. You might see a strong Wi-Fi signal on your phone, but that doesn't mean the connection back to the main router is fast or reliable. Each wireless hop between access points uses some of the available capacity, and walls, floors and interference make it worse. That's why we prefer properly designed networks with wired access points whenever possible.
- Can you improve my existing Wi-Fi without replacing everything?
In many cases, yes. Sometimes it's a matter of better equipment placement, adjusting the network configuration or adding coverage where it's needed. Other times, the equipment can't handle the size of the home or the number of connected devices. We'll evaluate what's already there and recommend what makes sense rather than replacing things unnecessarily.
