
What should a builder do about home technology?
A general contractor does not need to be the home technology expert on a project. The builder does need to make sure someone is planning it, before framing, wiring, cabinetry, and ceiling layouts lock those decisions in. Televisions, streaming devices, desktop computers, cameras, control processors, and other fixed equipment should also be hardwired when practical.
Every device moved to Ethernet is one less device competing for wireless capacity. That leaves Wi-Fi available for the phones, tablets, laptops, and other devices that truly need it.
A fast internet connection cannot make up for poor access point placement, missing Ethernet, weak equipment locations, or a network that was treated as an afterthought. Builders do not need to engineer the network. They should make sure the home has a plan for service entry, network equipment, ventilation, power, wiring, and access point locations before construction removes the opportunity.
Technology affects more than the low-voltage plan
Home technology often overlaps with other trades. None of these items are especially difficult when they are coordinated early. They become harder when every trade completes its work from a separate plan and conflicts are discovered after installation.
