Whole-home audio is a music system designed to serve more than one room. It makes music available where people actually spend time. That last row is the one that surprises people. Wireless does not mean wire-free. The speaker may get music and commands without a speaker wire. It still needs electricity, which usually means an outlet and a visible cord at every location.
That limits where a wireless speaker can go. It also raises questions about furniture placement, outlet locations, cabinetry and how to hide the cord. "Everything works over Wi-Fi, you can just add a speaker later" skips the part of the planning that matters. Homeowners, builders, architects and designers should decide where speakers may go and how they will get power before the room is finished.
Sometimes a wireless speaker is the cleanest answer. In other rooms an in-ceiling or in-wall speaker with concealed wiring looks more intentional and gives you more freedom about where it goes.
Speaker placement matters
A good speaker in the wrong location still produces disappointing results.
In a kitchen, the speakers should cover where people cook, gather and sit. Putting both speakers at one end of the room leaves one area too loud and another hard to hear. Large open-concept spaces need the same attention. The kitchen, dining area and living room may look like one room and behave like three. Careful placement is what keeps the sound even as someone walks through.
Outdoor audio works the same way. A few speakers played loudly will push sound past the property line and still leave quiet spots near the house. More speakers placed closer to the listeners give better coverage at a more comfortable volume. Placement should follow how people use the space rather than where it is easiest to cut a hole.
Where the amplifiers and equipment go
The speakers may be visible, but much of the system can live somewhere else.
In a centralized system, speaker wire runs from each room back to an equipment rack or utility area. The amplifiers, network equipment and other components stay together in one organized place. That keeps gear out of cabinets and makes the system easier to service.

Control should match the size of the system. For some homes the Sonos app is everything you need. Other homes are better served by a control system that brings music together with televisions, lighting, shades and the rest of the house. The best control method is the one people will actually use. Starting music should take three steps: choose a room, choose something to play, set the volume.
You do not need to do the entire house at once
Whole-home audio describes the direction of the system. It does not require every room to be finished on day one.
Most homeowners begin where music will make the biggest difference. The kitchen and patio. The living room and dining room. The garage and exercise area. Those first zones get planned so more rooms can be added later.
During new construction or a remodel, run speaker wire to the future locations even if the speakers and amplifiers are not being bought yet. Add outlets where wireless speakers might go later. In an existing home, the first phase usually focuses on the rooms that can be reached cleanly without tearing anything up. Starting small also lets you learn how you actually use the system before expanding it.
The point of whole-home audio is making music easy to enjoy in the parts of the house where it belongs. That usually costs less than putting speakers everywhere.
