What should I think about before installing security cameras?

Start with what each camera needs to see. Placement, lighting, storage and which events send you an alert all matter more than resolution. A 4K camera at the wrong angle is worthless at 2 a.m. 

Security cameras usually get compared by resolution, field of view and night vision distance. Those specifications matter, but they don't determine whether a camera captures useful video when something actually happens.

A well-planned system starts with different questions:

  • What does each camera need to see?
  • Do you need to know that someone entered the property, or do you need a clear image of a face?
  • What will the camera see after dark? Where will the recordings be stored?
  • Which events should send a notification?

We look at the whole system before choosing cameras: placement, wiring, lighting, recording, privacy, network needs and remote access. We also look at how the cameras should work alongside the rest of the home.

Start with the purpose of each camera

The first step is deciding what each camera needs to accomplish, before deciding how many to install.

A wide camera mounted high on the corner of a house gives a useful overview of a driveway or backyard. It will show that someone entered the property. That person may also be too small in the frame to identify. A more focused camera placed near an entry path captures a much better view of someone's face.

Those are different jobs. One provides awareness, the other provides identification. Ask one camera to cover too much and you get a view that looks impressive. It tells you very little when the footage actually matters.

Mounting height matters as much as the camera. Cameras get placed high because the spot is convenient, protected and offers a wide view. The result is often a clear recording of the top of someone's head.

We plan each camera around a specific purpose. Near doors, walkways, gates and driveways, we look at where people actually move and which angle is most likely to capture useful detail. The aim is the right area from the right position, at whatever size that turns out to be.

Wired and wireless cameras serve different markets

Wireless cameras make sense when running new wiring is difficult, or when someone wants a smaller, less permanent solution. They are easy to buy, install and connect to a cloud service.

The tradeoff is greater dependence on Wi-Fi coverage, batteries, cloud services, or all three. A battery-powered camera may stay asleep until it detects motion. That affects how much of an event gets recorded. A Wi-Fi camera is also affected by weak coverage, interference, or changes to the home network.

When wiring is practical, we recommend wired Power over Ethernet cameras. One category cable carries both power and data, which removes battery maintenance and gives continuous recording a more dependable foundation.

That doesn't mean wireless cameras are bad. They serve a different part of the market and can be the right call when the limitations are understood up front. They just don't always meet the reliability and long-term support standards we want on a professionally installed system.

Nighttime performance depends on more than the camera

A camera that looks excellent during the day can produce a disappointing image at night.

Nighttime performance depends on five things:

  • The camera sensor
  • Available light
  • Infrared illumination
  • The mounting angle
  • Nearby surfaces

Soffits, walls, rooflines, snow, water droplets and spider webs all bounce infrared light back into the lens and wash out the image. In Minnesota, snow is the one that surprises people.

Exterior lighting makes a major difference. In many spots, one modest, well-placed light beats infrared night vision on its own. It improves color, facial detail and the clarity of anything moving.

The camera and the lighting should be planned together. A camera facing a bright fixture fights glare, or leaves part of the scene much darker than the rest. A camera mounted under a reflective soffit can have excellent daytime video and nearly unusable footage after dark.

We look at what each important view will actually show after dark. Resolution matters. It cannot fix a poor angle, weak lighting, or a person who fills a small part of the frame.

Decide where the video will be stored

Camera systems record locally, in the cloud, or through some combination of the two. Cloud recording is convenient and needs less equipment inside the home. The tradeoff is an ongoing subscription and more dependence on the camera provider.

Security camera footage is unusually sensitive. It shows when people arrive and leave, and when the home sits empty. It shows who comes to the door, which vehicles are there, and what happens around private parts of the property.

Store that video in the cloud and you are trusting the provider's security practices, privacy policies, account protection and retention rules. Camera companies do not all treat those the same way. Know who holds your footage, how it is protected, and what happens if the service or the subscription changes.

Local recording keeps the primary footage on a recorder inside the home. It supports continuous recording and longer retention, without a seperate cloud-storage subscription for every camera. Local recording does not remove every concern. The recorder still has to be secured, the accounts protected, and the equipment kept current and supported.

For residential systems, Signal AV primarily recommends Ubiquiti UniFi Protect. It gives us wired cameras, local video storage, local processing of camera detections and useful remote access. There is no required per-camera recording license. The primary recordings stay at the home rather than uploading to the cloud by default.

Remote access and cloud storage are not the same thing. UniFi Protect lets you view live and recorded video from anywhere, securely, with the main archive still at the house. Important clips can be exported or archived off-site when you want that.

UniFi Protect is not the only option, and some projects have requirements that take us elsewhere. We start there because its approach to wiring, local storage, remote access and notifications matches the kind of system we want to stand behind.

Video doorbells and notifications need planning too

A video doorbell is useful because it sits closer to face height. It captures people who walk up to the main entrance.

It does not replace every front-of-house camera. A doorbell may not clearly cover the driveway, the garage doors or the front yard. It also misses anyone who never walks up to the door. That is why many homes use both a video doorbell seperate exterior cameras which capture different views.

Notifications need the same planning. A camera that alerts every time a tree moves, a car passes or someone walks through the backyard stops being useful for long.

Modern systems can tell people from vehicles, animals and packages, depending on the camera and the platform. Detection areas, schedules and notification rules narrow the alerts down further, to the places and times that actually matter:

  • A driveway camera may only need to report vehicles after certain hours
  • A side-yard camera may only need to alert when a person enters a defined area
  • A backyard camera may not need to send anything while the family is outside

We configure notifications around what you actually want to know. The point is alerts that stay useful enough that nobody starts ignoring them.

The network and long-term support matter

Modern security cameras are network devices, and they lean on the network hard.

Several cameras may be sending video to a recorder around the clock, while the same system serves remote access to phones, tablets, computers and home control interfaces. That takes reliable wiring, the right network switches, correctly sized recording equipment, and enough storage for the retention period you want.

Fast internet service does not make up for weak home network. The cameras talk across the home network before any video reaches a remote device.

Long-term support is worth settling before installation. Cameras, apps, recorders, storage drives, software and network equipment all change over time. Settle four things up front:

  • Who owns the system account
  • How access gets shared with other people
  • How footage gets retrieved when you need it
  • Who to call when equipment needs updating, expanding or replacing

A camera system should not become hard to support because the original product was cheap to buy.

Think beyond the cameras

Cameras show what happened, and they are one part of home security.

A complete plan may also include a video doorbell, smart locks, an alarm system, smoke and carbon monoxide detection, water sensors, exterior lighting and garage door control.

Depending on the products and control platform, a camera event may turn on exterior lighting, or cameras may be accessible alongside locks, alarms, and garage doors through a  home automation system. The exact level of integration depends on the equipment selected.

Not every device needs to be forced into one app. Some functions work better through their own controls. What matters is deciding how the systems should work together before the house fills up with unrelated devices, subscriptions, accounts and notifications.

Plan the system before choosing the cameras

A good camera system is measured by whether it captures useful images, records reliably, protects sensitive footage, sends alerts worth reading, and stays easy to use and support. The camera count and the megapixel number tell you none of that.

That starts with planning the views, the wiring, the lighting and the recording. Then the privacy, the network, the remote access and the related security systems. The camera choice comes last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are wired security cameras better than wireless cameras?

We recommend wired Power over Ethernet cameras whenever running cable is practical. Wired cameras give continuous recording a stronger foundation and remove any dependence on batteries and Wi-Fi coverage. Wireless cameras can still make sense when wiring is not practical or a smaller solution is appropriate.

Why does Signal AV recommend Ubiquiti cameras?

We primarily recommend Ubiquiti UniFi Protect. It combines wired cameras, local recording, useful remote access, intelligent notifications and professional network infrastructure in a platform we can install and support. It also avoids a separate cloud-recording subscription for every camera.

Is local recording more private than cloud recording?

Local recording keeps the primary video archive inside the home, with no continuous upload to a camera provider. The recorder and the accounts still need to be secured. You do keep more control over where footage is stored and how long it is kept.

Can I view locally recorded cameras when I am away from home?

Yes. Local recording does not limit access to the house. A properly designed system provides secure remote access through a phone, tablet or computer while the primary recordings stay on the local recorder.

Do I need 4K security cameras?

Not necessarily. A properly placed camera with good lighting can be more useful than a higher-resolution camera trying to cover too much area. Resolution matters, and so do the sensor, the mounting angle, nighttime performance, and how large the person or vehicle appears in the frame.

Is a video doorbell enough for the front of the house?

A video doorbell gives you a useful view of people who approach the primary entrance. It may not clearly show the driveway, the garage, the front yard or other paths toward the home. A doorbell and a separate exterior camera serve different purposes.

Can security cameras work with lights, locks, alarms and garage doors?

Yes, depending on the camera system, the security system and the home control platform. Cameras may be viewed alongside other systems, and certain events can trigger lighting or other actions. These possibilities are worth considering before the products are selected rather than added as an afterthought.
